“There’s both eating and drinking in it.”
Sean Kelly, the patriarch of Kelly’s Butchers in Newport, Co. Mayo in the lovely West of Ireland really had a twinkle in his eye the day he decided to create “the pudding pint”.
The result was a black pudding made in the shape and exact size of a pint of Irish stout. His innovation was rewarded with not one but two gold medals from Le Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goute-Boudin in March 20111. The Normandy-based food group host the classic black pudding festival each spring in Mortagne-au-Perche, France. Kelly’s two medals were in the ‘Creative Pudding” and “Traditional Pudding” sectors.
Every year the Fraternity do an “away trip” promoting black pudding around the globe. In September 2010, 23 members visited Ireland and were welcomed with open arms in County Mayo. The traffic stopped, a street market and festival was put on, the hog was roasted, traditional pipers led a parade down the main street of Newport and, naturally, the sun shone brightly! Sean Kelly was the proudest butcher in Ireland as he was first ever Irishman to be conferred as a Knight of the Black Pudding at a civic reception.
The Fraternity’s successful visit to Mayo was capped by a glorious meal with a Kelly’s Pudding theme of course. This splendid gastronomic affair was created by award winning chef Seamus Commons at Knockranny House Hotel and it fairly knocked the socks off everyone lucky enough to enjoy it. Of the seven divine courses no less than six involved Kelly’s Pudding – and they included the dynamic Pina Colada sorbet topped with toasted pudding and ‘party poppers’ (remember Space Dust anyone?).
